Prologue

“Woof! Woof... Woof!”

Dogs were quite punctual animals. That’s a reality she really, really wished she had never discovered. Actually, there were times when she would think it would be good if dogs knew how to take care of themselves. They would take a walk all by themselves, running wherever they wished to, to where nature called, and then they would safely come back home, all clean of course.

“Woof! Woof!”

But her sleep completely gone due to a certain barking dog bouncing on her stomach, Min Shan could only reluctantly open her still tired eyes. The impatient animal considered her too slow and started licking her face to better wake her.

“I’m up, I’m up” she protested, not feeling like being sticky with saliva this morning.

“Really,” she grumbled, “it’s my day off you know, I need my beauty sleep!”

The dog could only bark louder and Min Shan smiled helplessly. What a habit she gave this little thing. A really bad one!

She flushed her face under the water and could only take the leash and an empty bag for a morning run.

Under her jogging uniform, she couldn’t help but shiver a little. The air was still fresh and not many were already outside. Mister was already tugging the cord, wanting to run freely. Locking the front door, she directed her pet for a walk towards the park.

Coming back home, she smiled at her husky and put its food in its bowl, observing the whole thing being wolfed down in a couple of minutes.

Today was Sunday and the nurse wasn’t scheduled to come. So, as every Sundays for a month now she went to the guest’s room near the staircase.

The room was still dark. The curtains were really thick, not letting much of the morning lights enter. A man was peacefully sleeping on the small bed, his back facing the door. The regular beeping of the machine, being the only sign that he was alright.

“Jiao Long, how long do you intend on sleeping?” she asked.

Crossing the chamber, she opened the curtains and the window, letting the morning in.

“Really like a pig ah, asleep for a full month yet still keeping it going.”

He didn’t hear her at all. As always, he was ever so silent, which never bothered her anyway. She kept on talking, immersed in the conversation she was having with herself. And while chatting, her hands were working.

She first checked the tubes and the metallic apparel it was connected to, then she turned him, arranging his sleeping position. He was previously sleeping on his left side, his face looking towards the wall; she let him laid on his back now. Touching his cheek, she felt the stubbles that pricked against her soft hand a little.

Opening the drawer by the bed's head, she took out a razor and the aftershave. Dragging the chair by the window near the bed, she put a blanket on him before sitting.

Mister sat in one corner of the bed, behaving obediently as she did all the cleaning, shaving him. She hummed a song while working and when finished, she touched the now smooth skin, satisfied with her work…

As she was putting everything back to its original place,  a faint voice seemed to come to her ears.

Blue eyes met with dark ones. Her heart skipped a beat.

"Those in an intense coma could open their eyes but see nothing," had said the doctor.

However, this person’s eyes were following her every movement as she took some steps to make sure.

The familiar yet completely stranger man was… awake?

“Who are you?” repeated the man.
