Chapter 2: New Reality

NOT EDITED

The reflection, even if not clearly, was simply not that of her face! What's with this young pretty face? What with those two buns, what with that white skin?

This was too unscientific, even thousands of séances in esthetic surgical operations couldn’t have turned her into this! And how old was she? She was definitely in that same range of years as the one who was talking to her!

Unsatisfied at being ignored, that servant said with venom laced in her voice,

“What? Do you think that because you’re just a bit pretty you’d be able to seduce him? Two years ago he hated it, trust me, he still hated it now! If you’re not careful, who knows if you won’t end up losing your life!" As though appeased by her own words, she smiled while continuing, "they say the emperor himself had granted him the right to kill those he despised, small little things like you would be no big deal.”

Saying so, that girl finally left in a hmpf, her head tilted as though she was far superior. Before exiting, she wasted a glance at the third person in the room, spitting,

"Jing Lu, I warn you, stay away from her for your own good." And she was finally gone. Not that Lane would plead with her to stay!

Said Jing Lu lifted her eyes towards Lane and the latter could see reproaches in those teary eyes. Reproaches directed towards her. After all, the poor girl only tried to help and in the end, got entangled in the mess.

Lane, who still didn’t know what was going on, couldn’t afford to make more enemies -and certainly not with this kind person who, since her awakening was helping her-, so she hastily apologized, and the other’s face became complicated. In the end, she sighed and said it wasn’t Lane's fault. Lane touched her nose and faced towards the sky sighing in her heart. What could she say, it really wasn't her fault, ah!

Following behind Jing Lu, after many twists and turns, Lane soon came into that famous pavilion that was so feared. Many courtyards were laid there for everyone to see.

“If we have good relationships with the elder servants here, we may not be chased away,” advised Jing Lu and Lane nodded, for the lack of anything else to do. Less she talked, fewer mistakes she was bound to make.

As they were walking, Lane took the time to turn her situation again and again in her head. It could be someone’s prank, but she didn’t know who would waste so much money on the decors and actors just to prank her. She could be dreaming, but that dream had lasted way too long already… she turned it again and again and tentatively thought about what she least wanted to think about. Transmigration of the soul. This kind of unscientific thing, forgive her for not thinking about it first, but she was a rational person. Only, her views were forced to broadening up at this moment.

Nevertheless, if she did consider that it was what actually happened, then she really had grievances in her heart. Those people who transmigrated, wasn’t it triggered because of something specific, anything, from circulation accidents, eating rotten things, electrocution and so many more… she did none of that, okay? She simply slept! Who could explain to her then why she ended up here! In a time when there was an actual living emperor! She didn’t die okay, her body was completely fine back there, so let her go back! She certainly didn’t want to be a maid! She already had a hard time obeying orders as an OL now she had to be a maid, did they want her to commit murder? That young master already sounded like pain before even meeting!

Furthermore, looking into her new identity, wasn’t she pitiful? She had read plenty of stories, but where had it been written that they turned into a bullied servant? When others had the chance to be princesses, legitimate or illegitimate daughters of high officials or generals, she had to be a maid, a servant? She had to address herself as lower in life? She was quite unwilling! Lane’s heart turned sour.

They finally stopped in front of a door and another maid came to lead them. Shortly after, they were presented to the head of the courtyard, but the latter didn't even give them the time of the day. Merrily pushing them towards others to have them ranged their things and immediately started working.

The previous servant still led them towards their new quarters, definitely better than the previous ones.

Not too long after, they encountered the mean bucket-throwing-servant girl whose name Lane had yet to remember -if she did ever hear it actually-, who was already ingratiating herself with others.

***

At night, as they were eating in groups, Lane kept on being attacked verbally with no provocation on her part.

“The general would be coming back some days from now, who knows, maybe with your face you can charm him.” They mocked her.

They were gossiping, trying to shame her. From what Lane understood about her situation today, Fu Bin was the daughter of a previously well-renowned merchant. But who knew who he offended, he met his end and was proved to have dealt with illegal affairs. His properties and goods were seized, some members of his family were enslaved. He himself sold his daughter for money to flee before they got to him. What a charming man! They weren’t making any efforts to lower their voices, so Lane heard it all. Could it all be true? She didn’t know, but it seemed to have some truthful foundations.

They gazed at her, sneering, Lane turned and smiled at them. To make her angry with this little? Dream on! Instead, well, they were helping her fill the holes in her identity. After, all, she wasn’t as lucky as the other transmigrators and had none of the previous host's memories.

“Sister Bin, can you come to help me?” that smiling sister, Jing Lu, said.

The other had been kind all along. Lane had no reason to refuse, but when they turned around the corridor, Jing Lu stopped walking, instead the servant turned to face her, her expression one of anxiety,

“What should I help you with?” asked the puzzled Lane.

“You don’t need to listen anymore.”

Ah, so it turned out she just wanted to help her out of the room. It must seem awkward, indeed, to stand in the same room as those who were insulting your family.

“You can’t be reckless and slap someone here. Sister Zhu had been lenient, but those in here won’t be, be careful.”

So it’s like that.

She had previously wanted to talk less in order not to attract attention, after all, they were talking so strangely here, so she thought her sentence over a bit and said,

“Thank you, sister, for the advice. From now on, I’ll take it into consideration.”

The other nodded to her, apparently really satisfied with this answer,

“That’s good.”

At night, they were arranged to sleep in the same room.

Lane went to sleep, hoping that upon waking up, she would be in her own apartment.

The following morning dashed her hoped in cold water, as once again, her recently made servant friend woke her with urgency.

“How can you sleep so much?" she rebuked, "we may be assigned to the young master, but we’re still servants!”

Lane who just woke up had her head fuzzy and to be honest, didn’t hear her. She was more dissatisfied with the fact that once again, she had been woken up in the dead of the night, hours before the rooster itself emerged from slumber! Another excoriating fact was that she was still in this strange world.

It seemed this was really going to be her new reality.
