Prologue

For as long as she could remember, Lan Guoying had always lived in a small village in the forest. Life there was monotonous, but in many ways than one, it was fun. The sole relative she had was her mother, and blood ties aside, she was quite well acquainted with the sisters of the orphanage, where she helped sometimes, and also quite popular with the children living there. Seeing the same people every day, having the same friends, and enjoying the time of her youth, the little bud had been already seventeen. A real beauty, in and out, always with a smile on her face and never forgetting to be humble and kind.

However, tragedy struck her quite harshly. Her ill mother finally passed away, leaving for her a lengthy letter. It was dusty, letting her know it was written months or maybe years beforehand yet it had never been given to her before that day. Guoying had found many more copies of it in her mother's drawer as though the woman had written many versions before settling down and acknowledging the one she carefully folded and put in an envelope to pass to her daughter.

It turned out, Guoying wasn’t as lonely-in-the-world as she thought, for, between apologies and bits of advice, her mother revealed to her, finally, the name of her father, pleading with her to meet the man. Initially, Guoying hadn’t thought of going. For seventeen years she had no news of the man and didn’t even know he was alive yet. Why bother with him? She already had a part-time job that could support her through high school; life was going to be just fine by herself, or so she thought.

Nevertheless, when going through the rough versions of the letter, the first drafts, reading the part that had been censured in the final version, she understood that the man, her father, had cheated on her pregnant mother more than once and even had a baby before their engagement. Enraged, and with the memory of her suffering ill mother still fresh in her, she decided to go to H city, if only to give a piece of her mind to the person. She may be sweet usually, but there were just some bottom lines that shouldn’t be crossed, and wronging her mother was a big no. Hell, had she been in her mother’s shoes, she wouldn’t have fled, but instead, make sure to get the highest alimony from a divorce after smacking the man of course!

The farewells to the friends weren’t real ones, as she promised to come back quick enough. After all, she just took a couple of clothes and some materials, those kinds of things wouldn’t last for long.

But life just had a way of knocking down her plans. She first ended up lost in that big city and after struggling, she had to rely on an obnoxious and quite arrogant person for help. Arriving in front of the house indicated in the letter –or should she called it a castle? -, she was banned from entering and had to wait for the return of the master which happened long in the night… and the rain just happened to keep her constant company the whole time.

All these just fueled her determination to lash at the man. Shouting at him her resentment would certainly warm her in this cold and wet night. However, when he did come back, he had the driver pull the car as he came out in a rush and before she could confirm his identity -in order not to yell at the wrong person-, there were already tears glistening in his eyes, freezing her on the spot and the words she wanted to say died in her throat.

When all was said and done, she reluctantly accepted to hear his version of the affair. To say that she was really being fair would be a lie. She merely wanted a cheap place to sleep. If here, wouldn’t she then save the money she prepared for her hotel stay? She very much entered the household hung up on hating every person living there. They were all people that made her mother suffer after all. Nonetheless, as one day turned into a week, then into a month, she couldn’t help but find herself melting towards them. Interacting with everyone a little more she wondered just what happened that year back then, to separate these two people, for it seemed this father was still very much in love with her mother. Hearing the news of her death, he actually had a heart stroke, and waking up in the hospital, he still insisted on going to her grave. The grandparents she thought had no feelings and disdained her mother for being poor, were actually smitten with her in just mere weeks. They had, it seemed, still deep respect for her mother. She couldn't, not love them.

Without knowing when Guoying started being reluctant to leave them. She was already thinking of them as one family. But everyone wasn’t as warm and welcoming as that. Her stepmother, Mei Ping, and her stepsister, Yaling, actually hated her very core. In the beginning, it was a cold silence as they were ignoring her existence, but when it was made clear that she was from now on a member of the family, the cold shoulder turned into bullying.

Meanwhile, the father was happy to know that she was starting to accept him as she said yes to him supporting her in the best high school in H city.

There, she met again with the arrogant young man, Tu Yinjun, who in the end, after a fair share of events, ended up becoming her boyfriend.

As years passed by and the mother and daughter pair were growing more persistent to chase her out, secrets got revealed resulting in her father angrily pushing out his wife and the one who in the end, had never been his daughter, properly signing a divorce with both parties present this time.

Yaling, after that, had still tried to seduce her fiancé, Yinjun, while her mother tried to sue her now ex-husband. Karma was quite harsh on them as Mei Ping learned some months later about her breast cancer. From there, the woman started losing her mind. Yaling, deeply affected by her mother’s state, started losing hers too. She tried to threaten the smitten couple but ended arrested by security and tossed out of the hall the day of the wedding, as she was pleading incomprehensible things.

As she was flying to her honeymoon destination with her newlywed husband, Guoying got the news that Mei Ping had hung herself and Yaling was involved in a traffic accident that took her life.

Even though there was a certain relief to be felt, for the most part, Guoying was apathetic. These two people, she never tried to harm them, yet they were so fierce in their pursuit of her. As such, she couldn’t find it in her to be sad about their deaths. At the same time, though, they were people she had known for eleven years. At some level, their deaths were affecting her.

In the end, it was a page that had to be closed and life should just continue. And hers, with her husband by her side, could only go better.

***

She let out a loud scream, her face full of tears. Quickly enough, the whole manor was lit as the household was emerging from slumber in a panic. People were running to the place where the sound was coming from. The door was yanked open as several persons entered, searching for an intruder. However, once the light of the bedroom was turned on, men and women were met with the sight of the teenager writhing under her covers, shouting and crying but still very much asleep.

“Miss, miss, wake up” approached one maid to plead, not daring to touch the young mistress.

Ling’er, ling’er, what happened?” Mei Ping finally woke up and made her way between the present servants. “Ling’er, wake up already, it’s a nightmare, Ling’er.”

She shook the young girl, until her eyes unfocused and scared, finally opened. Like a scared rabbit she wanted to jump and hide, but Mei Ping held her and embraced her, softly whispering calming words, not forgetting to order the rest of the people out.

“Mom?” finally asked the croaked voice of her daughter.

“Mother is here,” Mei Ping assured.

“Mom?” the girl asked again, her hands shaking, her voice becoming huskier.

En, it’s alright; it was just a nightmare,”

“Mom?”

“En?”

The tears streaming down like a river, Yaling embraced her mother back, her hands fiercely locking the person, as though she never wanted to let go.

“Mom, you’re alright. You’re here, you’re here… You’re alive.” She was mumbling incomprehensibly while shaking.

Mei Ping was quite helpless, as this was the very first time that her daughter had such an episode. Not really knowing what to do she just kept on holding her daughter in her embrace, as the other was crying buckets.

LGM Prologue

The sky was still dark but the dawn couldn’t be far away. The air was cold and unkind to the skin, biting whatever was left uncovered. The faraway cries let people remember that the New Year had come. However, in the Jia residence, despite the soft cries of pain coming from a particular room, the rest of the manor was dreadfully silent. Many were up, in a sitting position, waiting for the news that was late to come.

General Jia was particularly anxious as he let his fingers tapped against his thigh, his brows furrowed. His sons were fidgeting too, and the eldest one, Fai Cong, was constantly putting his hand on his belt, where would have been his sword had it been a later time of the day. Touching the tilt of it let him relax on the outskirts of the city and it had long become a tick he never tried to suppress. The loss of the steel was now making him feel even more anxious. The other two youngsters were still sleepy, their heads tilting up and down as they fought to be awake. Chang He, the elder one of the two, had dragged his younger brother, Huang Ju, out of bed when he heard the running feet of the servants going to and fro with hot water and other preparations. Thinking that for once he would get to see the newcomer the very instant he would be here had excited him to the point of chasing off his sleepiness. Who would have thought that several hours later, that person had yet to arrive still! Huang Ju for his part hadn’t been given any choice as his brother shook him again and again until he fell off the bed. At this time he really wished he was little Xin Yi, at the very least, he would still be comfortably sleeping. What difference would it have made to wait for the proper hours of the morning, ah?

Father and eldest son usually weren’t as anxious as that. After all, the general had experienced such an event four times already. What of a fifth? It should have been less worrying. However, a month ago, it had been brought to him that one of his subordinated lost his wife during birthing. And the fact that this pregnancy of his beloved had affected her like the previous ones didn’t, made his heart raced. She was constantly tired these months and while she didn’t throw up this time, she had still bled a little. And now, she was in that dreadful room for a whole day now! How could his thoughts be pacifists? He was restraining himself to not enter the room and shake these easy-going women! It was his wife that was crying for hours now for crying out loud!

Grandfather Jia and grandmother Jia were in the room with them too, while the other members of the family were waiting respectfully in their own pavilion.

As the sun pierced the night away, the first cries of the child were heard. Grandmother Jia congratulated her son, the congratulations were repeated by the bowing servants in an interminable echo, the news traveling the whole manor really fast. The littlest ones were shaken awake by the voices and while there was a little relief on his face and that of his eldest child, the general was still a little stiff, waiting for the head of midwives to come and tell him that his wife was alright. However, the person was late to come in his opinion and in the end, feeling impatient as well as that he could hold on no longer, he went to open the room just as the woman came out holding the new additional member. And while he smiled politely, and gave his fifth child a brief glance, he didn’t linger and instead promptly enter the room that still had a thick smell of blood; not deterred by the servants that tried to dissuade him.

His wife was lying there, looking at him with a tired expression but a still silly smile on her face. A smile formed its way to the shaking corner of his lips. He wanted to talk but in the end, no words came out. Crossing the room in long strides, he was fast to come near her. Her gaze followed him all along as he obediently sat next to her, holding one of her hands, while his were still slightly shaking.

She was alright, he told himself. She was still alive.

“Silly” she mouthed, not having the energy left to muster more.

“How do you feel?”

She smiled as an answer, her gaze then going to the door.

“The little one is alright” he was fast to assure. From what he had briefly seen, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong, if there was, he would certainly have been informed by the head of the midwives already.

Chuckling a little at his doting manner which wasn’t usually as obvious as this and at his ignorance of the fact yet, she finally managed to tell him with her slightly plump face revealing dimples,

“It’s a girl”

The callused hands that were caressing hers stopped; his expression growing a little astonished.

“Is it?” he asked then, cracking a smile that lighted his whole face, mirroring hers.

Outside the room, the loudness was going higher and higher, as everyone was welcoming the first daughter of general Jia, first miss of house Jia since five generations ago.

Jia Bao Bai.

The Stepmother's Daughter

(Not my pic)

Description:

It wasn’t wrong if one said that she was vain and naïve, a grudge holder and a person of short temper; her biggest fault certainly, was that she liked money as much as her mother did, if not more than the woman. But could one really keep on being like this even though one had no power to back it up?

The experience she had lived, how could she describe it?… In the end, what should be retained was that she knew what the future had in store for her. Disinherited by her father, poverty, and death.

Once appeared that long-lost daughter from God knows where everything took a turn for the worst for her mother and herself. The strained relationship they had with the elders of the family degraded even more and a couple of years later, some secrets got revealed questioning her blood ties with the family. In the end, they were expelled and treated like dirt.

With that kind of knowledge, how was she supposed to react? Was she supposed to lower her pride? Was she supposed to stay low-key in order to prevent her ultimate demise? Was she supposed to befriend that sister –apparently the real legitimate child-?

She simply could not!

Yaling hated. Hated with the fire of a thousand suns. With a cherry on top. If relationships should be severed, let her be the initiator!

Let's Get Married

(The pic isn't mine)

Description

Who knows what tomorrow is made of?

Brought up and living with a doting family, the young Jia Bao Bai knew nothing of hardships. She was the pampered young miss of house Jia, first daughter in five generations. Her existence could be described as leisure and uneventful; spoiled beyond belief and treated better than a princess in her family.

That was, of course, before the emperor demanded her whole clan to be annihilated and those not of age to be turned into slaves. Gone were her parents, her brothers, her uncles, her aunts, her grandparents, her cousins… gone were her pieces of jewelry and fine clothes… gone were her horses and playthings.

From a pampered daughter of a general, she became a mere servant. Not only did she have to fend for herself but she also had to humble herself before others and to be addressed as their lower in life.

Holding grudges and grievances but quite unable to act upon them, life just continued as such. However, karma was still quite efficient for a couple of years later, the emperor too, passed away. But troubles came with such a calamity and taking advantage of the turmoil in addition to the particular attack in the manor she worked in, she took the time to destroy her slavering contract before fleeing!

It just happened that along the road to freedom, she encountered this young master, five years her junior who was adamant about taking responsibilities and marrying her when he would be of age. Quite irresponsibly she was fine enough to agree with that!

The Bored Girl Ended Inside A Book

(Not my pic)

Description:

Losing her life after a sickness that glued her to her bed for too many years, Lyanna first thought that maybe it wasn’t that bad for now she wouldn’t be bored anymore. All to find that actually she wasn’t in the afterlife but rather inside a book she once started to read but discarded because it got plain annoying!

What about the heroine that always misunderstands and doubts her fiancé? What about said fiancé been so secretive and always pulling the ‘it-was-all-to-protect-you’ card? What about the evil persons being so plain evil and always one dimensional? There she goes again, could someone give some brain material to that woman? Dear Mr. Hero, you can’t treat life as grass! Ah, she just couldn’t keep on reading such a book!

The bright side though, was that now she had a healthy body and she could, while minding her own business, looked at her surroundings and watched them as though they were but entertainment –alas not the best one. The bad side, those people wouldn’t let her be a simple side character and always whisked her at troubles’ door. In the end, she couldn’t help but interfere. It shouldn’t be a surprise then to hear her say to that overly white flowery heroine “My beloved, to be so incredibly stupid should be considered a crime!” “Moron” “To be this generous can also be considered a crime!” “That’s not naivety, it is plain brainlessness!”

Ah, it’s so difficult to redress those many terribly written characters!
