Chapter 1: Intruder

The one talking to her at this very moment wasn’t even someone she used to see in this hospital. Maybe he was new thus was really a complete stranger or maybe he just didn’t use to come to the department she was placed under. Perhaps that was why his talking was all gibberish in her ears and had to be repeated a few –maybe a little more than a few- times. The words this nurse was saying, she had trouble understanding them. Taking them apart, they were easily understood; however, as a whole, they just didn’t make sense and had her brain take a halt in the process.

It was just impossible, right?

How could he be dead? How could he? How dared he?

She was the sick one between them! She was the one preparing to say goodbye, how could he go? Just like that, without even … without…Yesterday, talking about wanting to die after her father…did she jinxed him?

At which point did the tears start to flow, she wasn’t even aware…

And the news had yet to really sink in when the door was flung open, and a woman entered. Blinking a few times, Bai Xiang took in the beauty in her bedroom’s hospital, having the impression that the other had a slightly familiar face she couldn’t recall at the moment. She was clad in black from head to toe and her eyes were somewhat red. Had she been in another mood, Bai Xiang would have complained a little about how she, this sick patient, could only look more like a ghost every day no matter what she wore or how long she would receive medicines, a fact that made her feel a little ugly so why was this very pretty and lively person entering here to agitate her!

However, the young miss Bai was in a mood for nothing, not even acknowledging the other. And after listening to the words said, she was in even less mood for courtesy and had the other departed, almost giving her bruises with how hard she was flinging her pillow at the person when the said person refused to budge although asked somewhat politely. Ha! Her stepmother, she had dared to present herself like that. No kidding!

And perhaps, if she had met the woman any other day than the one she had been told about her father’s death, Bai Xiang would have had some kind of semblance of friendship with her, for her father at the very least if nothing else. But where would she have that kind of patience now in her grief!

***

The following weeks, let the Bai Xiang have even less amiability for the other person. The dead one's funeral arrangements weren't even finished that she wanted to discuss the legacy!

“You married him for a week, why would you have anything?... Did you marry money?”

“So what? He married me for my beauty too!”.

That she was beautiful, wasn't something to debate. Was it why her father married her, Bai Xiang, who didn't even know that her father was seeing someone, had no idea.

And maybe it was hearing and seeing that person almost every day that made it all worse for a few days later, her state deteriorated to the point where she had trouble walking and it kept worsening on and on.

However, when her father's lawyer came in touch with her, she couldn't help herself but release a stream of curses, wondering for a long time if the man who had been her dad had lost his marbles over this sexy secretary of his, -for it seemed that was what she used to be. He had actually written his will! Goodness, if you want to marry, then marry, why rushed to write your will? Were you trying to curse your fate?

***

Bai Xiang lightly tapped her finger on her wheelchair’s edge annoyed but with no place to vent. Her father really did draw a will on his wedding’s night. A wedding he never told her about. When exactly was he planning to do so?

Two weeks after the burial had been the scheduled day for the reading, Ming Xi had whined a lot, trying to rushed things and didn’t even seem to be willing to wait. After the continuous influx of incredible information, Bai Xiang state continued to deteriorate to the point where she couldn’t move, the reason why the reading had to be reported for a full month. But the moment she grew better,  Ming Xi rushed the process.

That woman really exhausted her civility!

In the said will, the late man included some of his companies’ workers, some friends, and the majority left, he divided it equally to her stepmother and herself. What was irritating was that her begetter named this woman as her legal guardian! As such, her share was under that woman’s control until her twenty-first birthday.

Bai Xiang glanced at Ming Xi sitting on the sofa some feet in front of her, her face full of joy and without a doubt already imagining the way she’ll spend her money. She retrieved her gaze, quite sure that in her stepmother’s hands her legacy wouldn’t last.

No matter if he married for money, couldn't he had a better? Bai Heng really underestimated his wife’s greed!
